Commonwealth of Massachusetts – Because of my research in the area of investment advisor compensation and disclosures, I was approached by the Secretary of State’s Office for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts to help discuss and create new regulation for investment advisors regarding fee disclosures, specifically a required fee table for state registered advisors. The group, while small, is made up of investment firm owners, leaders and board members of investor advocacy groups from across the country, representatives from the CFP board, and regulators from the Registration Inspections, Compliance and Examinations (RICE) Section of the Secretary of State’s office. We have met as a group multiple times since the summer of 2018 to discuss and review the viability of different regulation options, the impact of possible regulation on stakeholders including investment advisors and clients, and the role of regulation in the competition between state and nationally registered advisors. This has been a fantastic opportunity to put my research to work outside of academia. In addition to my two published papers in this area, I have started another paper that will hopefully aid in current regulation being discussed at the state and national level.
CFA Institute – I have previously been a practice exam writer for the CFA Society Boston and the CFA Institute.
